Retigo Error 40 - Safety thermostat tripped

This error has appeared because one of the internal safety thermostats has tripped, causing a normally closed circuit, has been broken and become open, not completing a full circuit. The PCB sends a small current around this and monitors that it comes back.

To trigger this, one of following was met:

  1. temperature in the cooking chamber reached 365 °C
  2. temperature in boiler reached 140 °C
  3. temperature in electrical compartment reached 90 °C
  4. temperature in draft diverter reached 70 °C (gas models)
  5. one of the thermostats is faulty

Possible Causes

Here are a list of the most likely reasons, why this may of happened;

  • short circuit in SSR which controls the heating elements
  • faulty temperature sensor
  • motor is not running when heating elements are on
  • faulty one of the safety thermostats (S1, S2, S3, S7, S8)

Blue Version - Steps

1. check the actual temperature in the electrical compartment

2. reset the safety thermostat. In case of more safety thermostats in the oven (S1, S2, S3), remember which one was tripped (the one which clicks when pushed in) S7 - el. compartment will reset itself once temperature will drop

3. check if the SSR are not permanently ON

4. check heating elements for short circuit to the ground

5. check if the motor is running when heating elements are ON

6. check if the temperature sensor of cooking chamber is showing correct values

7. in case of problem with S3 also check the boiler for lime scale

Orange Version - Steps

1. check the actual temperature in the electrical compartment

2. reset the safety thermostat.

Additional information that needs to be sorted, but maybe useful

Turn on over, set to 180c and allow to run.

Press Round circle and hidden menu will appear. Highlighted will be the active components.

Monitor the values of the chamber and probe. the difference between these should be no more than 12c

If chamber stops increasing, but the probe temp continues to increase this will mean the chamber sensor is faulty and needs replacing.

if temp continues to rise above the target temp, first check the pre-heat temp, this maybe set too high.

also open the door and check the element, you may find that the element is faulty and constantly running, you'll notice this with the element either glowing or by turning the appliance off at the wall isolator allowing to cool and then turning the appliance back on, but not running a program and watching the element increase in tempurature.

Checks that can be made, turn mains power off to the appiance and check that it is dead using Safe Isolatation practices.

Open the front panel, 1x 8mm nut at bottom fully removed, lift and open on hinge. here you will find SSR (Solid State Relay)

Check the resistance (Ω) between the orange coming out of the , to the bottom terminal of each of the SSR and the check between the two at the bottom of the SSR. These should be per the electrical resistance table on error codes page.

if it is just the front part of the element that is active this is through the permanent live orange. and possible has a pin-hole in the element, which is cause the element to run, but not at an high enough current to trip the mcb or the mcb is too big to trip the unit.

it is possible to get the element working on just two of the three legs by disconneting the stat leg on the element which has an issue and properly isolating the 1 bad leg at the element and the ssr, taping them up fully until a replacement element can be obtained.ew
